Test mode lets you experience your study exactly as participants will see it. Use it to verify everything works correctly before going live.

Why Test?

Testing helps you:
  • Verify flow: Make sure questions appear in the right order
  • Check logic: Confirm conditional logic and screening work correctly
  • Review experience: See the participant perspective
  • Catch errors: Find typos, broken links, or confusing questions
  • Validate timing: Estimate how long the study takes
Always test your study before publishing. Issues discovered after launch affect your data quality and participant experience.

Entering Test Mode

1

Go to the Recruit Tab

Open your study and navigate to the Recruit tab.
2

Save Your Study

Make sure all changes to your Interview Guide are saved.
3

Enter Test Mode

Look for the test mode option or generate a test link.
4

Generate a Test Link

Click to generate a unique test link you can use to preview.

Taking a Test

  1. Copy the generated test link
  2. Open it in a new browser window (or incognito/private mode)
  3. Complete the study as a participant would
  4. Answer each question and proceed through the flow

Testing Tips

Use incognito mode. This ensures you see the study as a fresh participant would.
Try different paths. If you have conditional logic, test multiple scenarios by answering differently.
Test on mobile. Many participants use phones. Check how your study looks on smaller screens.
Time yourself. Note how long the study takes. Is it within your target duration?

What to Check

Question Content

  • All questions display correctly
  • No typos or grammatical errors
  • Question instructions are clear
  • Answer options make sense

Question Flow

  • Questions appear in the right order
  • Conditional logic works (questions show/hide correctly)
  • Screening rules terminate when they should
  • No dead ends or missing questions

Media and Formatting

  • Images display correctly
  • Videos play (if applicable)
  • Recording works for audio/video questions
  • Formatting looks good on different devices

Completion

  • Study ends with a proper completion message
  • No error messages or broken pages
  • Total time is reasonable

Testing Screening Rules

To test screening:
  1. Answer in a way that should qualify you
  2. Verify you continue to the full study
  3. Start a new test
  4. Answer in a way that should screen you out
  5. Verify you’re terminated appropriately
You’ll need to generate a new test link for each test attempt, or use different sessions.

Testing Conditional Logic

For studies with conditional logic:
  1. Map out all possible paths
  2. Test each path by answering accordingly
  3. Verify the right questions appear for each path
Example paths to test:
Answer to Q1Expected Result
YesShows Q2, Q3, Q4
NoSkips to Q5
MaybeShows Q2 only, then Q5

Test Responses

Are Test Responses Saved?

Yes, test responses are saved but marked as “test” data:
  • Appear in your response list
  • Clearly labeled as test responses
  • Excluded from analysis reports
  • Can be deleted if desired

Cleaning Up Test Data

Test responses can be:
  • Left as-is (they won’t affect analysis)
  • Deleted individually
  • Filtered out when viewing responses

When to Test

Required Testing Points

Test after:
  • Creating or significantly editing your study
  • Adding or modifying conditional logic
  • Setting up screening rules
  • Making any changes before publishing

Re-Testing

Re-test if you:
  • Edit questions after initial testing
  • Change the order of questions
  • Modify screening or logic rules

Common Testing Mistakes

If you have conditional logic, test ALL paths, not just the main one.
Your study might look different on phones. Always check mobile experience.
Test both qualifying and disqualifying scenarios to ensure screening works.
Take the test at a realistic pace. A rushed test won’t reveal timing issues.
Have a colleague test too. Fresh eyes catch things you miss.

Exiting Test Mode

Test mode doesn’t need to be “exited.” When you’re ready to go live:
  1. Complete your testing
  2. Fix any issues found
  3. Re-test if you made changes
  4. Proceed to publish your study
See Publishing Your Study for next steps.

Test Checklist

Before publishing, confirm:
  • Completed at least one full test
  • Tested all conditional paths
  • Verified screening rules work
  • Checked on mobile device
